The urge to burst in your manager\u2019s office and launch into an \u201cI\u2019m underpaid\u201d sermon is tempting, but it\u2019s not the way to win yourself a bigger paycheck. Complete the checklist below before having the \u201cbig talk\u201d and you\u2019ll be reaping the rewards all the way to the bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #1: Ask yourself if you deserve one<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you been a team-player? Do you \nregularly go above and beyond the call of duty? Has it been over a year \nsince your last pay increase? Ask yourself if you deserve it (and be \nhonest) rather than asking yourself if you need it. A rent increase or \nnew car payment does not warrant a raise and should not be used as a \nfactor in negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #2: Don\u2019t forget to smile<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you go into the conversation with \nthreats and demands, your manager will immediately be put on the \ndefensive. Be confident, approachable and pleasant. You\u2019ll receive a \nmore positive response from your manager and will have remained \nprofessional throughout the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #3: Make an appointment<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>All serious conversations with your \nmanager should be scheduled ahead of time (e-mail is fine). Let your \nboss know that you are requesting a formal review and would like to \ndiscuss re-negotiating your salary\/position. Schedule approximately 60 \nminutes for the conversation, and be sure to cover all of the steps \nbelow before requesting the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order \nto determine what you should be receiving for compensation, you first \nneed to find out what you\u2019re worth. Do they have a policy on raises (i.e. maximum 10%)?<br>\nHow often are raises given to employees (bi-annually, annually)?<br>\nBe clear on what you are requesting. Go in there with a solid number in \nmind (try to avoid giving ranges as you will usually end up at the low \nend); however, don\u2019t give the impression you are unwilling to negotiate.\n Say something like, \u201cI propose an 8% increase to my current salary for \nthe following reasons\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE: Depending on the company, a typical raise is between 5-15%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #4: Prepare your argument<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Preparation is everything. If you don\u2019t \nhave your position well organized and fully-supported before you walk \ninto the meeting, you might as well cancel it. Here are a few of the \ntalking points you should have prepared:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Personal Achievements<\/strong><br>\nHighlight areas within your professional development where you have \nshown marked improvement (i.e. management style, listening skills, \nverbal communication). Not only will your boss know that you take his or\n her feedback seriously, but that you have also taken the initiative to \nimprove in those areas.<\/li><li><strong>Company Contributions<\/strong><br>\nCite your most recent accomplishments that have positively impacted the \ncompany, group and\/or client relations and highlight those that will \nbenefit future projects. Discuss your professional track record by \nciting specific areas in which you excel (i.e. deliver projects on time,\n under budget, effective management style). Document your achievements \nby keeping a weekly journal so it\u2019s handy when you need it.<\/li><li><strong>Client\/Peer Kudos<\/strong><br>\nReference specific, unsolicited praise and admiration you\u2019ve received \nfrom higher-ups or clients. These endorsements speak volumes about your \nprofessional integrity and give evidence to the fact that your work is \nnoticed by others.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #5: Keep your mouth shut<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you get your raise or not, do not\n discuss your raise with co-workers. Pay varies from person to person \nand employees who become privy to the paychecks of others may become \nresentful and feel betrayed. Your manager is sure to hear the grumbles \nand be less than impressed with your lack of discretion. Do yourself and\n everyone else a favor and keep your compensation package to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #6: Plan your response<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You should at least consider your \nresponse if your manager comes back with a counter-offer. Don\u2019t feel \ndiscouraged, since most issues surrounding money go several rounds \nbefore a final settlement is reached. If you cannot agree on a dollar \namount, see what else you can negotiate. If you are denied an increase, \nit may be time to re-evaluate your current situation.
