You just have to be prepared and have a positive \nattitude. After all, this could be the greatest opportunity you\u2019ve ever \nhad. Get yourself ready with these sure-fire methods for a successful \ninterview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Before the Interview<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>What to wear?<\/strong>\n It used to be said that it was better to overdress for an interview \nthan to underdress. That\u2019s still sound advice. Take into account what \nrole you are interviewing for. The dress code will vary by position. For\n professionals (account executives, marketing, sales, business \ndevelopment, or manager level positions), wear something nice. It might \nnot have to be a suit, but something pretty close. When in doubt as a \nstrategic professional, overdress.<\/li><li><strong>Be on time!<\/strong>\n Take into account traffic, bad directions and parking challenges. If \nyou\u2019ve never been to the company before, drive there ahead of time. It\u2019s\n a pain, but you can\u2019t change a bad first impression by uttering, \u201cI\u2019m \nsorry I\u2019m late. I got lost\u201d.<\/li><li><strong>Arm yourself with information.<\/strong>\n Before you head off to the interview, it\u2019s a good idea to familiarize \nyourself with the company\u2019s Web site, business model and their products \nand\/or services. Knowing general information about the company will make\n you look proactive and genuinely interested in the position. \u201cGoogle\u201d \nthe company to find its Web site; then \u201cGoogle News\u201d the company to find\n out what the media are saying about the company.<\/li><li><strong>Check yourself in the mirror.<\/strong>\n Take a quick glance at your reflection before entering the office. \nToothpaste on your upper lip or spaghetti sauce on your tie will \ndistract the interviewer from hearing about your stellar background.<\/li><li><strong>Have a good handshake.<\/strong>\n There is no excuse for a wet-noodle handshake. If you serve up one of \nthese to your interviewer, you\u2019ll be branded for life. Test out a strong\n handshake on friends until you get it right.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>During the Interview<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Have a positive attitude.<\/strong>\n This is the most important attribute to a potential employer. You can \nhave the best skills out there, but if you don\u2019t sound excited about the\n job and the company, the interviewer will find someone else who is.<\/li><li><strong>Maintain good eye contact.<\/strong>\n Positive body language is key in an interview because it is a telltale \nsign of your listening and communication skills. If you get nervous and \nmust look away for a few seconds, act like you are pondering the \nquestion or a response.<\/li><li><strong>Sell yourself, but don\u2019t be cocky.<\/strong>\n When discussing your successes, be sure to give credit where credit is \ndue. Paint yourself as a team player and you\u2019ll be recognized for it.<\/li><li><strong>Connect your skills with the job.<\/strong>\n When the interviewer talks about particular skills that a successful \ncandidate must possess, take this opportunity to chronicle an experience\n that demonstrates how those skills have helped your obtain positive \nresults in the past.<\/li><li><strong>Fake thinking on your feet.<\/strong>\n Before the interview, come up with some \u201cimpromptu\u201d ideas and\/or \nrecommendations that could improve the company\u2019s site design, content or\n navigation elements. If you are applying for a sales or marketing \nposition, offer suggestions about a viral marketing campaign or e-mail \npromotion.<\/li><li><strong>Don\u2019t speak ill of former employers.<\/strong>\n Interviewers sometimes encourage candidates to spill the beans about a \nformer manager or employer, so stay on your toes before you say \nsomething you\u2019ll regret. It\u2019s okay to bring up general issues of an old \ncompany, but recommend solutions and end on a positive note.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Closing the Interview<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Have one \u201cremember me\u201d statement.<\/strong>\n You need something to distinguish you from all the other candidates, so\n spend some time and craft one very clever, unique and memorable answer.\n Candidates who are remembered are the candidates who get hired.<\/li><li><strong>Ask questions.<\/strong>\n A strong candidate comes to an interview with several specific \nquestions in mind. For example, ask the interviewer to relate a company \nexperience that he or she believes has helped them professionally.<\/li><li><strong>Have a timeline in mind.<\/strong>\n If you\u2019re right for the job, it\u2019s likely the interviewer will ask when \nyou could potentially start the job. If you \u201cdon\u2019t know\u201d or it could \u201cbe\n a month or so\u201d, your ranking on the candidate list could slip \nconsiderably.<\/li><li><strong>Ask for a business card.<\/strong> Following the interview, it is customary to send a thank you note; request a business card from each person you meet.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Follow-Up<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Be timely and specific when sending a thank-you note.<\/strong>\n Send an email thank-you within the first 24-hours following your \ninterview.
