They can teach you which policies are working and which policies may need to be revised.      For employees, an exit interview is an opportunity to give a review of their experience.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When both the employer and employee focus on constructively learning from each other, an exit interview can end on a positive note. Many times the feedback employees provide is positive, and when it\u2019s not, it gives you valuable insight on how to fix it for other employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Determine Who is Best for the Interview<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider having the HR\nmanager or an outside consultant conduct the exit interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Although it seems\nexpedient to have the department manager be responsible, doing so can obstruct\nuseful information. <\/li><li>That can occur\nbased on relationship dynamics or the desire for a good reference.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn Why Employees Leave<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees resign for many reasons.\nCarefully crafted questions can help to identify course corrections your\norganization can consider for improved employee performance and retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ask why the\nemployee is leaving. Listen and request more information if doing so adds value.<ul><li>When did you\nfirst decide to move on?<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Was there a\nparticular event that led to this decision?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Inquire about key\njunctures during a person\u2019s employment: <ul><li>As you look back\non your onboarding weeks, were there steps in the process that should be\nchanged? Please describe. <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>What, if any,\nchanges should be made in the employee performance appraisal process?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Ask questions\nabout the compensation, benefits, and perks of the workplace.<ul><li>What is your\nopinion about our company\u2019s salary and benefits package?<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Are there suggestions\nyou have for improving these or company perks?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conduct an Open-Ended Exit Interview<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Allow sufficient time to listen\nto suggestions and\/or complaints the departing employee offers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Inquire about\ntheir feelings about leaving the company without letting it become negative.<ul><li>How do they feel\nabout leaving? <\/li><\/ul><ul><li>What are the top\ntwo things about working here?<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>What three\naspects of this organization would you change?<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Please elaborate\non the most important change we should make.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Ask for\ninformation specific to their time with the organization.<ul><li>What was your\nmost important achievement at this job?<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>What is one thing\nyou hoped to accomplish and did not?<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>What supported\nyou with the first and limited you with the second?<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Closing Thoughts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Express appreciation\nfor the employee\u2019s service and contributions to the organization. <\/li><li>Close with a\nsimple statement. Thank you for making the time for this exit interview.
